This initiative comes in response to a recent report from the Stanford Internet Observatory, which uncovered extensive networks of accounts on Instagram that appeared to be operated by minors. Shockingly, these accounts were openly advertising self-generated child sexual abuse material for sale.

Researchers discovered that buyers and sellers of this illegal content were connecting through Instagram’s direct messaging feature. 

Instagram’s recommendation algorithms were found to worsen the problem by making the advertisements of this illicit material even more effective.

The alarming findings of the report caught the attention of prominent figures like Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who expressed deep concern over the matter. Musk took to Twitter to highlight the “extremely concerning” nature of Instagram’s recommendation algorithms promoting networks of paedophiles who commission and sell child sexual abuse content on the platform.
